Sozopol is one of the most beautiful and romantic sea resorts in Bulgaria. It is situated about 35 km. south of Burgas.
In the year 610 BC Greek colonisers from Milet settled in this area and called the settlement after their god of beauty Apollo - Apolonia. During the next centuries the town has a stormy and remarkable history.
Today Sozopol combines the ancient and the modern times, and its architecture successfully joins the old town to the new one. Its splendid beauty and artistic atmosphere attract many tourists from all over the world.
Consists of a new and an old part. The old Sozopol similar to the old Nessebar is fascinating with its ancient houses, covered with wood, the small paved streets and cozy restaurants that scatter the fragrance of delicious fish meals.
At the beginning of the old town on an alley with flowers and palms are waiting old fashion phaetons which owners are inviting the tourists to a small romantic trip around the resort. And just on the end of the old Sozopol on the street “Sea Rocks”, the houses are disposed truly on the rocks above the sea with a lovely view to the blue crystal water and the island “Saint Ivan” is just across.
Aside to the alley with the flowers and the phaetons there is a nice market street with all kind of kiosks with polite sellers that are inviting the tourists to buy souvenirs, post cards, cosmetics.
Sozopol has two main beach strips – in the old part and in the new town. In front of the beach is formed a nice small green park with trees and benches for the relaxation of the tourists. The two beaches are really big and wide, covered with nice yellow mild sand. The beach in the new part is a little bigger than this in the old part. The water is warm and clear and it is suitable for swimming and diving. In the new town are built many new hotels, offering good services, also are available rooms and apartments.
The famous Tsar's Beach is located to the north of the town. Nestled between the rocks to the south of the town is the Raiski Beach (Paradise Beach) and further southwards - the Kavatsite Beach. The Harmanite Beach is immediately to the south of the so-called "new" town. An ancient necropolis was found here in 1993 and excavations are still going on.
The old cobbled streets and the high fences, in front of which old women sit and chat, knit laces and sell fig jam, are inseparable elements of the whole centuries-long history of the town. Interesting places to visit are the Archaeological Museum and the Art Gallery. At the beginning of September each year, the town hosts the big Apolonia International Art Festival.
